Garbology : Chapter Four

I find it interesting how companies can make so much money on the product that we all want to get rid of, trash. Trash is a savior to David Steiner. I don't understand, if David can become a multimillionaire with just trash, why can't we do it? "The scandal devasted the company, its stock value dropped $25 billion..." (Humes 88). I don't understand how trash can be valued at such a high price. Apparently, landfills are the heart of the companies. Without our trash, these companies would be useless. I'm shocked that these landfills are being drained by the amount of cash. Landfills are trash, yet people make tons of cash. I will never seem to understand.

The Joy of Garbage

I find it interesting how the Annie keeps talking about the government spending and there problems with trash. They keep telling us to spend and spend but they don't realize about the outcome that is causing the problems. One thing that really caught my attention was when she stated "mothers breast feeding" there children and how toxic is going into them. That completely blew my mind. I never thought of it like that. It's sad that this is happening and slowly they are hurting us with all the poisons. I also never realized the fact that why items are so cheap sometimes. We aren't paying for the product, were paying the people. It shocks me how America doesn't tell us any of this. I'm also surprised that she mentioned the computer. She talks about that they only change one little item on the computer, but in order to complete the computer, you have to order a new one to fit the piece in. This article and video is very interesting and provided me with information that I didn't know!

I'm impressed on how little Terry actually knows about trash. She says she's been reading Garbology, yet she asks a bunch of questions that Humes answers in the book if you actually read it. It just shows you how Americans work. That's that I wont discuss. It amazes me how clearly Humes explains the garbage dump, which shows me he does his research and does know what he's talking about. I was shocked about the fact that we throw away about seven pounds of trash away a day as said by Humes himself. If we throw seven pounds a day, with 356 days a year, that's a lot of trash. I'm also baffled that now that Humes knows about our current trash, he estimated that instead of 64 tons of trash a lifetime per person, its now 102 tons of trash a lifetime per person. This is a huge amount of trash that is unnecessary, yet its that amount of because of laziness. I'm still shocked how China makes money, by basically throwing away our trash which in my opinion is embarrassing. China makes money for something we can easily do. Yet this is America the great who can't simply reduce the amount of trash we throw away.

Garbology : Chapter Three

Chapter three consists of points that don't really make sense to me. Were in economic debt at the moment so they tell us to buy things; yet if we buy it causes harm to the U.S, because of the replacement and throwing away trash. "...throw away perfectly good things in order to buy replacements..." (Humes 64). I'm fascinated by the fact that a bunch of random stuff ends up in the garbage. I'm baffled about dead bodies ending up at the dump. It shows me, that we simply do not care about our trash, we just want it gone. I also agree with Big Mike as people should see what ends up in the dump, maybe people will take consideration in what they throw away. "It's such a waste. More people should see what I see here," (Humes 64) You are right Big Mike! It also annoys me that being selfish and inconsiderate about our trash is the American life style in today's world. "Wastefulness has become a part of the American way of life," (Humes 70).

Garbology : Chapter Two

As I read chapter two, I didn't realize that we actually used "burners" for a trash solution. I never realized that it caused problems, I believed it got rid of them. From toxic to smog, burning trash causes a lot of problems I did not realize. New York one of the biggest trash dumps? Not a surprise, considering the amount of people that walk the ground everyday. Warring was a good man trying to solve our trash crisis. Sadly, he died from actually trying to solve it by catching a fever. I still don't understand why burners are bad, I realize some materials like paper can be burned no problem yet burning trash is prohibited in Los Angeles. The trash crisis is interesting because we don't want to spend money to fix it, yet we just want the problem to be solved with no effort involved.

Garbology : Chapter One

In Chapter one of Garbology, the author mainly gets into the facts and hard details about our trash. Puente Hills to be exact. His reason behind talking about Puente Hills is to inform us about the trash dump and where Los Angeles trash heads off to. He talks about the dangers of stacking our trash like a mountain. The author wants to inform us about our trash. What surprised me is that the trash being dug under. I didn't realize that our trash affects our atmosphere and could potentially affect our water. I find it annoying that even though the author explains our trash in detail and the effects of it, many people still won't change. I find it interesting, that we have not yet found a "complete" solution to this crisis and it concerns me to what will happen in the future when every single dump is filled up with trash.
